COLUMBUS, Ind. — Two people were arrested after police found suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl during a traffic stop on I-65, Columbus Police Department said in a news release issued Thursday night.
About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Columbus police officers stopped a black Chevrolet SUV for speeding on Interstate 65 about 4 miles south of the State Road 46 interchange for Columbus and Nashville. Police identified the driver as Benjamin Bracewell, 49, and the passenger as Sylvia Flowers, 37. Both are from Norman, an unincorporated community in Jackson County.
During the stop, police used canine Titus to sniff the air around the SUV. Titus indicated the odor of drugs, according to police. Bracewell and Flowers got out of the SUV and stood near an officer. Police found suspected marijuana when they searched the vehicle.
Officers also found a round, plastic-wrapped object at Flowers’ feet. They believe she tried to discard it.
Police arrested Bracewell and Flowers on preliminary marijuana-possession charges. At the jail, officers found more suspected marijuana and suspected methamphetamine in Flowers’ clothing.
Police took the plastic-wrapped object to the department for examination. It contained two bags. One held 449 grams of suspected methamphetamine, nearly a pound, which could produce from 1,800 to 4,500 doses.
The other bag held nearly 27 grams of suspected fentanyl.
After further investigation, police arrested Bracewell and Flowers on additional preliminary charges of dealing a narcotic drug and dealing methamphetamine, both top-level felonies.
